PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections) and PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) involve an underlying infectious or immune process. This requires diagnosis and treatment by a physician — typically a PANDAS/PANS specialist, pediatrician, or immunologist — before or alongside anything else. Clarity does not diagnose, treat, or manage the underlying infectious or immune cause, and does not recommend starting, stopping, or adjusting any medical treatment.
Common challenges with PANDAS/PANS
PANDAS/PANS is typically marked by a sudden, dramatic onset of symptoms, which may include:
- Sudden-onset OCD-type behaviors or severe anxiety
- Tics or motor symptoms
- Sudden mood swings, irritability, or aggression
- Regression in handwriting or motor skills
- Sensory sensitivity
- Sleep disturbances
- Difficulty with attention and behavior regulation
How MST is being explored alongside PANDAS/PANS care
MST simultaneously engages colored light, vestibular (motion) stimulation, auditory stimulation, and somatosensory input, processed together at the brainstem and subcortical level. Once the underlying infectious or immune process is being medically managed, some families explore MST for the sensory-processing, attention, and nervous-system-regulation symptoms that can accompany PANDAS/PANS — the same general mechanism explored for ADHD-type focus challenges and anxiety.
The typical program is a 12-day in-office intensive (two 30-minute sessions per day), followed by an 18-day at-home continuation. Most people notice early changes before the program is complete, though the full effect is typically not apparent until around 90 days.
What research says
What We Know
MST was developed by Dr. Steven J. Curtis, OD, and is listed by EyeLux (the equipment developer) among the populations who may explore MST.
What We Don't Know
There is currently no independent, published research specifically evaluating MST for PANDAS/PANS. Dr. Curtis's general 2019 outcomes research (Curtis SJ, Vision Development & Rehabilitation, 2019;5(4):235–248) does not isolate PANDAS/PANS as a studied population.
Questions to Ask
Has the underlying infectious or immune cause been diagnosed and is it being actively managed by a physician? What specific evidence exists for this application versus general mechanism reasoning? How will progress be tracked against a starting baseline?
Current medical approaches
PANDAS/PANS care is led by a physician and commonly includes treating the underlying infection (such as antibiotics for strep), anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory treatment (which may include IVIG in more involved cases), and psychiatric or behavioral support for symptoms. Clarity's MST program is intended to complement this required medical care, never to replace or delay it.
